Belleville, IL Engagement Photographer | What to Wear on Your Engagement Session

“Will you marry me?”  This question ushers in a time full of happiness, excitement, and anticipation. It is a special time that you will reflect back on even years and decades later, after your wedding day. An engagement session documents this period, the beginning steps toward your becoming husband & wife. They are your first family portraits.

We love engagement sessions! It is a great opportunity for us to spend time with you and your fiancé, getting to know you as a couple and capturing some great photographs of just the two of you in a relaxed environment. It also helps the couple to get more comfortable in front of the camera, so you can relax and show off your personality and your relationship.

Often, this will prompt the question “What should we wear?” or “Where should we take our portraits?”

For this blog post, we will focus on the first question and offer a few suggestions:

BE YOU!

  • You and your fiancé(e) are the subject matter, so wear something that reflects who you are and what you love. Think about how you dress when the two of you go out.
  • If you are a sports fans, wear your favorite teams jersey.
  • If you love the 40’s era then rock some t-strap shoes and suspenders.
  • Do you want to have a theme for your photo shoot? If so, think about the clothes that will complement your theme. Don’t be afraid to step into a “character”.

COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER

  • Clothing should be the same level of formality. If you are an upscale fashionista, help your love find an outfit that matches your level of dressiness (Unless you’re going for the “opposites attract” vibe).
  • Try to coordinate outfits without looking overly “matchy”. Avoid wearing the same colors and instead, find a color palette you love and piece together items from that palette that are complimentary to one another.

SPLURGE FOR SASS

  • Get a manicure! (You needed an excuse, right?) We love to show off your engagement ring with a close up of it on your hand.
  • There’s nothing quite like a brand new dress to bring out the fun for a photograph. And, if you’re all dolled up… it’s the perfect excuse for a post-session date night.

CHOOSING OUTFITS

  • The engagement session typically lasts about two hours. We suggest two or three outfits during this session. This will allow for both a casual and a dressy look, which will add variety to your portraits.
  • Bring plenty of accessories. Layering with a scarf or a jacket can add tremendous depth to the photograph.
  • Add a pop of color to your photograph with pink shoes, a yellow jacket, or some fun jewelry.
  • Dress for your body type. There are plenty of fashion magazines with suggestions, like this one.
  • Think about your location and pick outfits that will set you out from the background instead of fading you into it.

AVOID

  • Sleeveless shirts, turtlenecks, and clothes with logos/writing on them. These may not provide timeless looks whereas more traditional clothing choices will.
  • Baggy clothes. Well-fitted clothes translate better in photographs. Bring a belt to cinch a dress or blouse that may look bulky on camera.
  • Stay away from restrictive, overly fussy options. Make sure you are able to move comfortably.

Think of your engagement session as a date, not as a photo shoot. We want you to look natural, not posed, so have fun with it! Check out more outfit ideas here!
